Professional Profile ~ Crystal Booker

As part of the influenSPHERE (iS) blog roll, I will be sharing Business Development, Networking and Relationship Tips from the perspectives of Respected Business Professionals.

Featured Professional Profile ~ Crystal Booker, Entrepreneur

I just recently reconnected with Crystal through Facebook after 20 years. We went to high school together. I wasn’t sure what to put next to her name above because she does so many things, and from what I can see, she does them well! She is a Photographer, Film Critic, Radio Host, Co-Host and Journalist, and I am certain that I have left out a few. She is really making a name for herself in the world of entertainment.

influenSPHERE: Crystal, tell me how it all started. What did you do after high school?

Crystal Booker: After studying Mass Communications with a Minor in Music, I entered the corporate world with Bank of America. I didn’t like how the customers were treated. I eventually went into insurance. In 1998 My twins, Ariana and Aramis were born. They are my life! Everything I do, I do for them. I began to write for Mass Appeal News in December of 2009. My segment is Crystal on the Scene. In March of 2010 I started, my movie review website. It went from 200 hits a month to over 64,000 a month.

iS: Wow! You have been working hard. Talk to me about your movie reviews.

CB: I love movies that make you think. One of the best movies ever made was Citizen Kane. I can watch it over and over. They don’t make them like that anymore. Orson Welles wrote, directed and starred in it. The Kings Speech and Inception are two movies from last year that were amazing.

iS: I saw that you just did a review on Planet of the Apes. What are some other movies out now that you would recommend?

CB: I think that The Help is the best movie of the year so far. With Emma Stone, Viola Davis, and appearances by the great Cicely Tyson and Sissy Spacek, it takes place during the Civil Rights Movement in Jackson, Mississippi. You will definitely be drawn in to the emotions that these ladies are feeling.

iS: Crystal, tell me how you would like to influence the world.

CB: By showing what I can do. I want to report the good things. I want to bring quality entertainment back to the world. Real talent. Now it is based on looking a certain way, and the talent is really secondary in many cases. Hollywood “magic” can make anyone a star, but that doesn’t mean it’s quality. I also want people to see what Kansas City is all about. I want to show what we can do.

iS: You are very busy!

CB: Alexander O’Neal said to me once, “If you’re going to pursue a career in the music industry, you can’t do it part time.

iS: So how are you as a networker?

CB: In a word, phenomenal! I treat everyone the way I would want to be treated. I have learned to back up everything that I do. I can’t please everyone. I’ve learned not to take things personally.

iS: You have had some amazing accomplishments. Share a few with us.

CB: At the Soul Food Festival I got to hang out with WHODINI and we developed a friendship. I interviewed Tevin Campbell and Snoop Dogg. Snoop is a really nice guy; he is intelligent and gave insightful answers. I found that  these people aren’t the egomaniacs they’re made out to be. I am a distinguished member of the Kansas City Film Critic’s Circle, the movie critic of Kansas City’s Magic 107.3 FM, and a contributing writer to I Love Black have hosted and co-hosted radio shows on Blog Talk Radio.

iS: Crystal, you are inspiring. You inspire me.

CB: Thank you. There is more to come soon, and there’s no stopping me!

Crystal’s friend and Editor-in-Chief of Mass Appeal News“, Wayne Hodges sums it up with this, “Wow! Let’s see… Crystal is ambitious, dedicated, aggressive and determined. I could go on and on.”
